The Dutch RDW publishes its vehicle data as open data, and it is free to use. If you only need Dutch plates, you can call it directly. PlateRunner is for when you need more than one country, or one simple answer format.

One call, two countries

curl https://api.platerunner.dk/v1/plates/NL/XX123X \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_KEY"

Swap NL for DK, and the same call returns a Danish car. The answer has the same fields in both cases: make, model, body type, colour, fuel, power, weights, first registration and more. Fields with no value are null.

Why not call RDW directly?

You can, and for Dutch-only projects it is a fine choice. PlateRunner adds:

  • Denmark in the same API. Danish data comes from the Danish motor register, which has no public API of its own.
  • One answer format. RDW spreads a car over several datasets with Dutch field names. PlateRunner merges them into one answer in English.
  • Plates written any way. Dashes and spaces don’t matter.
